SATURN 2021

Started my Saturn season early this year.

These images were taken using a Celestron  C14  mounted on an Astrophysics AP900GTO mount and a QHY290M camera. RGB is done using a set of Chroma Technology RGB filters on a Starlight Xpress Motorized filter wheel.  Methane band images are done using a Chroma Methane Band filter (889nm  18nm bandpass).   Amplification is done using an Astrophysics Convertible Barlow working at 2.5X.

Image acquisition was done using  Torsten Edelmann's Firecapture 2.5 software.  All images are NORTH UP!    Processing was done using AutoStakkert! and Registax.

We had terrible monsoon this year.  This is the first time that the sky was clear enough to image Saturn.  Seeing was good but the transparency was poor!

The EZ red spot can be seen just after the CM.  The north polar spot can be seen but the polar hexagon is difficult to make out.

Condition was a bit unstable today with clouds rolling during my imaging run.

The belts and bands are well resolved.  It is difficult to see the polar hexagon as the north pole is dark.   There seems to be a low contrast spot on the STB just after the CM.

It rained most of today.  But the sky cleared at around 9pm.  Seeing was excellent but it was hazy.  I used the QHYIII462C to capture these images.   The IR image was taken using an IR850 pass filter.

The belts and band of Saturn are well resolved.  The south pole has a very strong green color.  The polar spot can be seen but it is difficult to make out the polar hexagon.

Condition was good today but not perfect.  There were periods of unstable seeing.

One can make out the North Polar Hexagon of Saturn.  The small dark spot on the NNTB can be seen on the RGB image.  Overall Saturn is quiet this year.

Condition was still unstable today.

The bands of Saturn are well resolved.  There are no low contrast storms on these images.

I had a late start with Saturn this year due to the monsoon.  Here is a image of Saturn a few days after opposition. The Seeliger Effect can still be seen as the rings are very bright.  Seeing wasn't great but it was better that what we had in a long time.  There is a hint of the polar hexagon.
