JUPITER: March 2008 By Christopher Go

March 31, 2008 Seeing was not good when I started but in a few minutes it improved to perfect condition! The NEBn white ovals are really about to merge now! They are now right next to each other. There is a hint of a 3rd oval to the left of the left oval! 3 ovals might merge in the next few days! The NEBn is filled with dark cyclonic spots and white anti-cyclonic spots on the NTrZ edge. The SEB is very busy with a lot of dark rifts. Note the white spot on the right edge of the SEB! The EZ is filled with festoons! The NTB at this region is very dark red.

March 30, 2008 Transparency was poor today. But seeing improved. The three red spots are visible in this image. The GRS, Oval BA and the STrZ little red spot. Note the interesting white oval on the right side of the SEB. The NEB is very red. Note the large NEBn white spot close to the CM.

March 29, 2008 The atmosphere was very unstable this morning. The live image was shimmering throughout the time I was imaging. Europa is about to transit the Jovian disk. While it's shadow is on it's way out. Note the big white spot on the mid-SEB just before the CM in the 1st image. Note the dark bars surrounding this spot. The SEBs is very busy with a lot of activity! Indeed the whole SEB seem to be erupting in activity! The two almost merging NEBn white ovals can also be seen in the 1st image just left of Io's shadow. Io's shadow covered WSZ on the 1st image and the 2 ovals on the 2nd. The large cyclonic red oval on the NEBn is also interesting. It is creating a disturbance like feature on the NTrZ.

March 27, 2008 It rained hard this dawn! When I woke up at 4:30am, the sky was clear but my veranda was slightly flooded. I had to drag some tables so my power adapter won't go kaput! Seeing wasn't great. The GRS is rising on this image! Note the small STrZ spot headed towards the GRS. They will have an encounter in the 2nd week of April. The SEB outbreak is spreading! There are now two SEB outbreaks in Jupiter. The NEB is dark! Note the disturbance like feature on the NEBn below the GRS.

March 26, 2008 Condition was variable this morning. The mid-SEB outbreak has grown! Note also the dark NEBn spots. The STrZ before the CM looks bright! Wonder what's going on in this area. The NEBn dark spots seem to be getting bigger. The NTB is very dark here.

March 25, 2008 This morning was very frustrating. It was partially cloudy and transparency was very low! I was only able to get one image of Jupiter before clouds rolled in! The GRS is at the CM! Oval BA and the red STrZ spot is rising on the right! There is an interesting oval to the left of the GRS. The NEB is very dark while the NTB is pale at this region. Note the huge NEBn Oval rising on the right!

March 24, 2008 Happy Easter! Seeing was fantastic this morning! The NEBn white spots look fantastic!! The cyclonic dark spots between the white ovals are very prominent. Note the white zone north of the NTB The NTB is very red and is very straight!! The blue feeston on the EZ are very distinct! The SEB is quiet here but note the bulge on the SEBs just after the CM. The dark spot is Callisto! It's not a shadow but Callisto itself! I was surprised when I checked JupSat and Gallileo and couldn't believe at first that this was Callisto and not it's shadow!

March 21, 2008 Seeing was variable this morning. The STrZ Oval 1 can be seen just after the CM. The mid-SEB bright spot just before the CM is still visible. It has not grown a lot since my last image on the 16th. The SEB is very pale red. The NEB is still very red. The NTB is well defined and seems to have the same color as the NEB. Feestons are visible at the EZ. Note the bright area at the EZs just at the CM. The motion of this bright area can be seen in the 3 images.

March 19, 2008 The sky was very unsteady this morning. Although it was mostly clear, transparency was very low. The NEBn is very interesting with anticyclonic white ovals lining up the NEB/NTrZ border. Betweens these white ovals are dark cyclonic ovals on the NEBn edge! These dark ovals will prevent the white ovals from merging. The SEB and EZ is quiet at this region. Note the dark band on the mid-SEB. A small dark cyclonic spot is also visible on the SEB at the CM. The NTB is very dark and well defined.

March 18, 2008 Seeing was rather poor this morning. And I had to rush in imaging because clouds were rolling in! Here's an image of Jupiter with the 3 red spot: The GRS, Red Jr and the new little red spot. Now all these spots will have an encounter in the coming months! The NEB is very red while the white spots on the NEBn are very prominent. There seems to be some darkening at the NNTB.

March 16, 2008 It was clear this morning. Jupiter was only 35deg above the horizon when I took these images. Seeing was okay but not great. Oval BA and the little STrZ red spot is setting in this image. The STrZ-2 oval is also visible here. The SSTB cyclonic oval is huge! Note the mid-SEB white spot just before the CM. Io and her shadow is at the NEB. The NEB is really dark red.

March 12, 2008 Although Jupiter is still very low, seeing was great this morning! There is an interesting white spot at the SEB at the CM! This feature looks anti-cyclonic. Note the interesting dark bands on the SEB. The EZ is very quiet. The NEB is notably red. Note the white spots lining up on the NEBn. The NTB is well defined.

March 11, 2008 My first image of the season!! Seeing was not very good as Jupiter is still very low. The Oval BA is still red! But it's color is much fainter now than before. The new red oval just northwest of Oval BA. The SEB has revived and is very dark in color. The NEB is also very dark. While the NTB has fully revived. The area north of the NTB is very dark. The EZ has returned to "Normal".
